GenProbe Inc. is one of the largest biotechnology companies based in San Diego. PCA has consolidated its six facilities into one master-planned campus. When completed, it will consist of 700,000 sf of buildings. PCA completed the first phase – this 261,800 sf facility.
The buildings internal components consist of 120,000 sf of FDA cGMP clean-room laboratory and controlled environments for the manufacturing of diagnostic products; 40,000 sf of R&D, including a 10,000-sf pilot plant; 52,000 sf of office space, theatre-style meeting room, interior atrium and onsite food-service; 50,000 sf of E.S.F.R. warehouse and highbay cold storage.
The concrete tilt-up panels were designed as repetitive elements. The 42′ high, 62′ wide panels were positioned to resist massive amounts of shear loads from the high-tech roof top-mounted mechanical systems. They were noted as the largest concrete panel lift in San Diego. The size and weight of these panels was designed to the capacity of the available cranes in San Diego. The sandblasted columns and concrete tilt-up panel bases give both a rich exposed aggregate look and sense of strength to the base of the building.
