Project Info.
This project is intended to replace the existing physical-education building and natatorium on the Cal Maritime campus that were constructed in the mid 1940s, with a 35,000 GSF Physical Education Facility and an indoor pool. The new gymnasium and natatorium will be used for physical education classes and the water activities required for licensure by the U.S. Coast Guard. The exterior of the building is designed to reflect a nautical motif, with roof forms and exterior finishes echoing those of the maritime history surrounding the college. The California Maritime Academy is a unique and specialized campus of California State University that offers students bachelor’s degrees in international business and logistics, facilities engineering technology, global studies and maritime affairs, marine engineering technology, marine transportation and mechanical engineering. Cal Maritime is one of only seven degree-granting maritime academies in the United States–and the only one on the West Coast.
